2026-2027 ACADEMY Boys & Girls (8U-12U)

2026-2027 ACADEMY 8U - 12U

What is our Academy Program?
A unique program in which 7–12-year-old boys and girls receive quality soccer training in a fun and flexible environment. For many, this is their first experience in competitive play. The program supports a successful transition from 7v7 (8U–10U) to 9v9 (11U–12U), and eventually to 11v11 play at the Select level (13U+).

The Academy program follows an age-appropriate training system developed under the guidelines of Georgia Soccer (GSSA) and the United States Soccer Federation (USSF).

Age Groups for 2026-2027 Seasonal Year:
Divisions (as set forth by GA Soccer)
  • Under 8   Players Born August 1, 2018 – July 31, 2019
  • Under 9   Players Born August 1, 2017 – July 31, 2018
  • Under 10  Players Born August 1, 2016 – July 31, 2017
  • Under 11  Players Born August 1, 2015 – July 31, 2016
  • Under 12  Players Born August 1, 2014 – July 31, 2015

Positive Family Support:
Positive family support is the backbone of a successful soccer program. When families prioritize encouragement over sideline coaching, they create a safe environment where athletes feel empowered to take risks and learn from mistakes without fear of judgment. This culture reduces burnout, fosters a lifelong love of the game, and builds a strong, unified community.

Positive Coaching:
Positive coaching is essential to player development. By fostering an environment where constructive feedback is embraced and encouragement is the primary motivator, our coaches empower athletes to become creative, resilient, and well-rounded players.

Family and Coach Balance:
Technical and tactical instruction should come from the coaching staff. When players receive conflicting or repetitive feedback from the sidelines, it can create confusion and frustration. By allowing coaches to manage the game, families can focus on providing encouragement and support.

Focus on Technical Development:
Key technical skills include dribbling, receiving, passing, and shooting. These skills allow players to maintain possession, progress the ball, and create scoring opportunities. A strong technical foundation ensures players are prepared to advance through the Academy Program and into higher levels of competition.

Player Assignments:
Players are selected through a tryout process. Assignment factors include age, gender, skill level, and team/coaching availability. Accepted players will be notified by email following tryouts.

As players develop, movement between teams may occur. Growth timelines differ for every player, and evaluations take place each tryout season. MAYSA is committed to both player development and competitive success.

Player Movement During the Season:
Though a player is rostered to a primary team, they may be asked to play with another MAYSA team on occasion. Players may move laterally within their age group or play up in older age groups, but they are not permitted to play down in younger age groups (for example, a 10U player may play in 11U, but an 11U player cannot play in 10U).

Additionally, girls are permitted to play on boys teams, but boys may not play on girls teams unless the team is specifically designated as coed.

All player movement decisions are made by coaches on a game-by-game basis to support player development or meet team needs. A player’s primary team always takes priority.

Season Fees:
For the 2026-2027 Seasonal Year (Fall 2026 and Spring 2027), Academy fees are $1000. Fees include registration for a Fall and Spring season, Georgia Soccer registration and insurance, referee fees, professional training/coaching, field usage, equipment, and league administration. Players who accept a roster position are expected to participate in both seasons.

Uniforms:
Uniforms are required and cost approximately $150–$200 per player. The package includes:
  • 2 game kits (home and away)
  • 2 training jerseys
  • 3 pairs of socks
Uniforms follow a 2-year cycle. The 2026–2027 year is the second year of the current cycle.

Practices:
Teams typically practice twice per week for 1.5 hours under licensed coaches at fields in Morgan County.

Games:
The Fall season typically runs from August to November. The Spring season typically runs from February to May. The goal is for Academy teams to play at least 10 games per season, half at home and half away. Games will only be played on the weekends. 8U-10U teams play 7v7 games, 11U-12U teams play 9v9 games. Games will consist of 2 halves, 25-30 minutes each.

Travel:
Travel is required. Most games are scheduled within 1–1.5 hours of home fields, with efforts made to keep travel reasonable.

Tournaments:
Teams have the option of participating in tournaments during the season (often pre- and/or post-season). Tournaments are a fun way to have additional team bonding and compete against teams we might not normally play! Participation is based on coach, parent, and player availability. Tournaments are an additional cost (not included in seasonal registration) and each player is responsible for payment prior to tournament registration and participation.

Technical and tactical instruction should come from the coaching staff. When players receive conflicting or repetitive feedback from the sidelines, it can create confusion and frustration. By allowing coaches to manage the game, families can focus on providing encouragement and support.

Focus on Player and Team Development:
MAYSA prioritizes long-term player growth and team cohesion. Technical and tactical development, combined with player and family commitment, ensures appropriate progression in competitive soccer.

All player movement decisions are made by coaches on a game-by-game basis to support player development or meet team needs. A player’s primary team always takes priority.

Fees:
For the 2026-2027 season, Classic and Athena fees are $1,300 for 13U-14U (includes both Fall and Spring) and $650 for 15U-19U (Fall season only). Fees include registration for a Fall and Spring Season (13U-14U) or Fall Season (15U-19U), Georgia Soccer registration and insurance, referee fees, professional training/coaching, field usage, equipment, and league administration. Players who accept a roster spot are committed for the seasonal year.

Playing Seasons:
For 13U and 14U Classic and Athena teams, the Seasonal Year consists of a Fall AND Spring season.

For 15U-19U Classic and Athena teams, the season consists of a Fall season ONLY. In the past, GSSA and MAYSA have offered a “friendly and/or tournament season” in the Spring for these age groups. However, this is not a guarantee. The ability to do this is based on several factors, and information regarding a potential friendly and/or tournament season will be conveyed in a timely manner. If we offer a friendly and/or tournament season for 15U-19U, additional fees will apply to players who register.

Uniforms:
Uniforms are required and cost approximately $150–$200 per player. The package includes:
  • 2 game kits (home and away)

Travel:
Travel is required. The Select schedule is not formed by MAYSA. We cannot determine which teams we play or where we play them. Our schedule is based on GSSA division placement. GSSA typically divides the state into regions (North and South) to minimize travel time (~1-1.5 hours); however, we may be assigned to play out-of-area teams (~3 hours). Carpooling is often beneficial.

Tournaments:
Teams can participate in tournaments during the season (often pre- and/or post-season). Tournaments are a fun way to have additional team bonding and compete against teams we might not normally play! Participation is based on coach, parent, and player availability. Tournaments are an additional cost (not included in seasonal registration), and each player is responsible for payment prior to tournament registration and participation.

In addition to pre- and post-season tournaments, Classic and Athena teams may participate in the GSSA President’s Cup or State Cup Tournaments. These tournaments allow Classic and Athena teams to compete for a State title, with the possibility of advancing to Regional and National competition.
